Cachexia is a multifactorial syndrome characteized by a progressive loss of body weight and skeletal muscle mass. It affects 50 to 80% of cancer patients, especially those with pancreatic cancer and is associated with worse outcome. Animal studies suggest that gut microbiota is involved in the regulation of energy metabolism and subsequent body weight changes, and could thus be associated with cachexia.
